RULES AND FAQ
- What is a manifesto?
Mostly used to refer to Ship Manifesto, it's a fandom meta essay meant to introduce fans to a ship and explain the appeal. The term seems to have originated with the Ship Manifesto Blog who have a multitude of examples for anyone unfamiliar with the type.
In this fest, we're not just limited to Ship Manifestos, though! Meta essays on individual characters, on arcs, on different adaptations or on whole canons are welcome!
- So… what's the difference between a fandom manifesto and a rec? Or a fandom primer?
*mumble mumble*
There are no hard and fast rules, really. Generally speaking, manifestos tend to include more direct textual analysis and more specific examples, as well as more personal opinion — the goal isn't necessarily to persuade someone to read the thing, as much as highlight what it is you love about it.
This fest operates on an honesty box/good faith principle, so use your own best judgement. If you think it counts as a manifesto, feel free to submit it to the collection!
- What is the minimum/maximum word length?
There is none! It can be however long or short it needs to be.
- Can I submit a video/audio/image?
Absolutely! If you can post it to AO3 you can submit it here.
- Is it okay to continue working on an old WIP for this fest?
Yup!
- Can I submit an old manifesto to the fest?
Generally speaking, exchange (and fest) etiquette is that if a work has been posted somewhere else, it's not eligible to be submitted for the challenge.
However, for this fest, you're more than welcome to submit a bookmark to the collection for it, using the AO3 add a bookmark to a collection ability. I'm sure we'd all be delighted to see more manifestos.
- Can I write a crossover?
Absolutely. A shipping manifesto for two characters from different canons is as valid as any other. Or a meta essay on why two canons might crossover well.
- Can I write Original Works?
Certainly! If you're really into a specific dynamic like 'Warrior Queen Who Defeated an Emperor/Foreign Royal Bride Legitimizing Her Rule' a shipping manifesto on why you love them would be magnificent!
- When is the deadline for signing up?
There isn't one! There's no sign up commitment. If you've found the collection and it's open, feel free to submit a manifesto to it.
- Where should I post my completed manifesto?
Go to the collection profile and click 'Post To Collection'. Works in the collection will be hidden until the deadline/reveal date.
- I'd like to post my finished manifesto to the AO3 collection, but I don't have an account.
If you go to https://archiveofourown.org/invite_requests and enter your email address, you should receive an invite within 24-48 hours. Make sure to check your spam/junk folders! If you don't receive one let me know and I'll do my best to get you an invite.
- I have another question/problem/suggestion/comment.
Please drop me an email at metamanifestomod@gmail.com and I'll get back to you ASAP!
- (What if this were an exchange, though?
Unconventional Fanworks Exchange allows ship manifestos and other meta! It opens nominations on the 1st of May.)
